Master.

There should have been another way.

I've found myself thinking that quite a lot, lately. I've seen far too many people die, and grieve, and break. Sometimes I couldn't stop it and sometimes…sometimes I facilitated it.

(You never met the Silurians, did you?)

It's not right, and it's not fair, and quite frankly I'm tired of it.

I can almost hear you laughing. You haven't cared about other people for a very long time.

It helped, a little. It helped to remember all the people you've hurt, all the futures you've torn away, all of the pain you've caused for those I care for.

It didn't make it easy.

I never wanted it to end this way. I never wanted to give up on you.

Wishing things had gone differently, of course, never solves anything at all.

The universe isn't fair, and there isn't always another way.

I'm sorry, Koschei.

My dear TARDIS,

You are my oldest friend, and I will forgive you anything, but I think we should have a bit of a chat.

Now, I know I haven't always been the best companion. Sometimes I steer you into peril, sometimes I snap at you, sometimes I leave things broken that ought to be fixed. I am quite sincerely sorry for all of it.

That is not, however, any reason to land right in the middle of a civil war. Thank goodness I looked through the scanner this time, I might have been blown to bits.

...Ah. I see. Lesson learned, please refrain from doing it again.

Yours,

The Doctor
